We Need an Industrial Strategy Urgently

The machinations around the saving of steel capacity at Scunthorpe has attracted a significant amount of interest.

The reality is the Government may well have been better to go straight to nationalisation.  Nevertheless, overall, most people support the action of the Government and believes it is in our national interest to retain steel making capacity.

It does raise some interesting questions about government policy particularly with regards to net zero, and at a local level the Cumbrian Mine. However, far more significantly and very importantly for the True North is what is the government’s industrial strategy.  The idea of a national and beneath that a sub-regional industrial policy is welcomed by the True North.   The real question is what will it contain?

It is nearly a year since the Labour party came to government. You would have thought that they would have had a good idea of what they wanted in their industrial strategy when they were in opposition, so when they arrived in government, they could implement it as quickly as possible.

True North recognises that this is a vital part of government policy which could have a huge impact for the North East and Cumbria.   It is therefore vital that the government gets on with producing its draft industrial policy and True North looks forward to contributing in a positive way to its development.
