Skills, Skills, Skills

A previous Prime Minister once said that the most important policy was “ Education, education, education”. I actually believe it is more than that and should in fact have been “Skills, skills, skills”.

In a modern, more complicated and technical world all kinds of skills are required and indeed are now a necessity for more and more businesses. Not having the necessary skills is becoming increasingly an issue not just for individuals and businesses but also for our economy and the country.

That is why I have continued with the Carlisle Skills Fair after 10 years organising and hosting it as the local MP. I realised that it had a place in the Calander and therefore decided that although I had ceased to be the MP I can still play a part in supporting local businesses and the next generation of employees.
The response to the 11th Carlisle Skills Fair has been fantastic. The training providers have all got behind it as have over 80 local and national businesses. The event will once more be held at the Carlisle College who as ever have been incredibly welcoming to everyone. In fact, As I write, the event is now oversubscribed which is a testament to the interest and indeed the need for such an event. Places are even being booked for the 12th Carlisle Skills Fair in 2026, which will take place on Thursday 22nd January 2026. Save the date now!

As I have always maintained Cumbria? is a great place to live and work in. However, we have no divine right to be successful. Therefore, ensuring individuals have the right skills for the future and businesses have the required skilled staff is critical to a prosperous and successful future. If the Carlisle Skills Fair can in some way hep to align both these needs, then that must be a positive.

Skills really do matter.
